JACKSONVILLE, FL -- It's hard to believe but bowties are no longer reserved for tuxedos or distinguished news anchors. The quirky accessory for men is gaining momentum, especially among men in their 20's and 30's.

"It (bowtie) is a way to assert your individuality," says fashion expert Stephanie Solomon.

First Coast News Anchor Ken Amaro has been sporting the bowtie for 20 years.

"I just decided to give up on the straight ties and started wearing bows," says Amaro. "I just liked the look. It was a different fashion statement."

For years, very few men tried the same approach. But now the bowtie is popping up on many different outfits.

Solomon says it can help for guys who have to wear suits everyday but can't afford several different suits.

"If you wear the same suit twice a week wear a bowtie one of the days," says Solomon.

Right now guys in their 20's and 30's are trying something totally new. They are pairing the bowtie with vest and jeans.

Solomon says it's a brilliant idea. "This is not a look you want to sport in a formal office," says Solomon. "But this is an appropriate look for an art department or creative field," says Solomon.

When choosing a bowtie many fashion experts say to go for a strong color or print. Mr. Amaro agrees.

"Solids are boring to me," says Amaro. "I usually go for the crazy print, the paisley or anything that pops."

But be careful of the shirt you pair the bowtie with. "The rules for a bowtie are the same as a necktie," says Solomon. "You don't want to wear something that clashes with your suit jacket."

Some people believe that clothes are an expression of the person wearing them. If so, then what does the bowtie say about the man who wears it?

"A bowtie says you're willing to take a little risk," says Solomon. "A bowtie means that you want to be noticed."

Ken Amaro says he isn't sure what his bowtie says about him. But he just wears bowties because he likes them. And that's a good reason too.
