JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Slowdown and be alert when driving in construction zones, that's the message the Florida Highway Patrol wants to get out this week. It's national Work Zone Awareness Week.
In 2006 there were 1,010 work zone deaths across the nation. During that same period in Florida, 119 people were killed in crashes in work zones.
So FHP troopers are conducting Operation Hardhat through Friday, April 11th. Troopers will be out in full force to find drivers not following the traffic laws in work zones.
FHP has several driving tips to keep everyone safe in work zones. Expect the unexpected. Slow down! Don't tailgate and keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction works and their equipment. Pay attention to the signs. Obey the road crew flaggers. Stay alert and minimize distractions. Keep up with the traffic flow. Schedule enough time to drive safely and check for traffic information. Be patient and stay calm!
Remember, the fines for violations in a work zones are double.
