Virginia Navy Base on lockdown after stabbing

A Virginia naval base is on lockdown after a service member was stabbed, and security forces are hunting for the suspect.

The stabbing happened at the Navy exchange near the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia. The suspect was identified as Wilbur Harwell, 26, an active-duty 3rd class petty officer, NBC affiliate reported.

"Security forces are looking for a white male, 165 pounds, blond hair, blue eyes, wearing tan cargo pants and a white shirt," the medical center posted to its Facebook page.

The victim was transported with critical injuries to the hospital, where he underwent surgery, officials said at a news conference.

All staff and patients were told to shelter in place and an alert was sent out to staff, reported.

"Code White, Code White, this is not a drill," the message said.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. A SWAT team was on the scene, WAVY said.
