Airman surprises son at school on Veterans Day

He's only eight years old but Veterans Day is already important to Lucas Jansen.

His mom, Kristy, is an Air Force Veteran. His dad, Staff Sergeant Michael Jansen, has served for 10 years and is currently in the Tennessee Air National Guard.

Lucas wanted his dad to be at Copper Ridge Elementary school's Veterans Day assembly Monday. For five and half months SSgt Jansen has been training in Texas. To keep him in the loop-- Lucas included his dad in the assembly with Skype on a cell phone.

"Being away from the family is one of the hardest things to deal with while being gone," said SSgt Michael Jansen while hiding in the principal's office. "He doesn't know I'm home."

To keep the surprise a secret, Kristy got the school involved. But that meant she had to delay her reunion with her husband as well. They saw each other for the first time in the principal's office before the assembly.

As Copper Ridge students sang patriotic songs and words to honor veterans, Ssgt Jansen waited behind the choir. But the before the program was over, Lucas spotted his dad in the crowd.

"I missed you guys! Missed you!" said SSgt Jansen as he hugged Lucas and Ethan, his 4-year-old son. "It was great just seeing them in front of me! They looked up they were a little bit shocked at first."

"Here I was this morning, I just want to tell them so bad because I'm so excited but it was worth it seeing the look on their faces, so worth it!" said Kristy.
