ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- Kelly Blount and her husband put the finishing touches on Teen Bliss Friday afternoon.
It's a night club they're opening especially for teenagers on County Road 210 in northwest St. Johns County.
The Blounts have given the hangout an arcade with video games, a bar that serves sodas, water, energy drinks, and non-alcoholic slushies, and there's even a disco ball over the dance floor.
The Blount's two teenagers have also helped in preparing the club for opening Friday night. Kelly said they wanted to give teenagers in the northwest St. Johns area a safe place to hangout.
"We live here, for [our children] to do anything they have to go into Mandarin or to downtown," Kelly said.
Meanwhile northwest St. Johns County's population is rapidly growing. Many of the people moving into the area are families with children and teenagers.
The idea for Teen Bliss started when the Blounts threw a 16th birthday party for their daughter.
"We had a great time," Kelly said. "The kids all said, 'That's the best party we've ever been to.' 'Can we have another one?' 'Can you have another dance like that?' It's pretty much where the brainchild started."
There will be chaperones and a sheriff's deputy making the rounds when the club is open. It's to be a fun and safe place for teenagers.
Teen Bliss will be open Friday and Saturday nights initially. It's open to middle school students from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. High school students are able to come between 9:15 p.m. and midnight. The cover charge is $10.
"We have to let them spread their wings," Kelly said, "but why not give them a place to do it with adult supervision and safety?"
