JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people are dead after a house fire in the 2200 block of Cato Road on the Southside.

A 12-year-old girl and an 71-year-old woman were found dead in a bedroom of the home, said Lt. Robbie Stevens of the Fire Marshal's Office.

Friends have identified the elderly woman as Corrine Allen and the young girl as Jamie Garr.

The 12-year-old called 911 and said the house was filling up with smoke. She was told to climb out a window and she said she would try. Then the phone cut off, according to JFRD spokesman Tom Francis.

The Fire Marshall's office is still working to confirm it but says it appears a space heater caused the fire.

Some of the house did have burglar bars but the two victims were found in a room without bars.

Cato Road is off Freeman Road which runs north off Emerson Street.

Investigators have not released the names of the victims.
