Mixed reaction to Main Street Bridge proposal

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Waterways Commission is looking at an idea that would restrict when the Main Street Bridge can be raised.

Commission Chair Don Redman says it's still in the very early stages, and there's no word on when they'll take up the issue again. However, it's creating lots of debate.

Drivers like Gary Felder drive over the bridge every day. He says he finds himself stuck for 10-15 minutes several times a week, and is for the idea.

"Seems like it'd be better if they make the boats wait and let the traffic go through," he said.

Right now - the bridge can't go up during morning or evening rush hour. Paul Howe has been the dock master at the Ortega Yacht Club Marina for almost 5 years. He says those restrictions are enough.

"The sailboats have just as much right to move around as people going to and from work," he said.

Any final changes to the bridge schedule need to be approved by the Coast Guard.
