JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A big thanks to many of our viewers and Facebook fans for sending in message of encouragement for our military troops and their families. Today Mayport put up a big board displaying every message sent in to FCN.
"Heroes don't need capes," is one message. "God bless our troops" is another.
Another message saying the military "rocks" caught a lot of positive feedback today, as well.
The board is on display at the Fleet and Family Support Center for now. According to Mayport's Public Affairs Officer, William Townsend, the board will be moved to various locations on the base to give our troops a boost.
Master Chief Stewart, the lead at Fleet and Family, says the messages give everyone reassurance each morning when they come in that they're "doing the right thing." He says it's great to know that "you count."
Captain Douglas F. Cochrane, the Commanding Officer of Naval Station Mayport, says he believes Jacksonville is the most "defense-friendly city" in the country. He says the experience during the Vietnam era, when military members returned home to disrespect, taught our country a lesson. Now he says wherever he goes in uniform he receives a "thank you for my service."
The message project started during Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Many viewers called into our FCN phone bank to give their thoughts. The messages continued to come in on Facebook until the large board was filled.
