JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The USS Underwood is scheduled to return to Naval Station Mayport after a six month deployment at sea.
More than 200 sailors assigned to the USS Underwood and helicopter squadron HSL 48 Detachment 3 will return to NS Mayport Tuesday, October 30.
The ship participated in multiple maritime security exercises in addition to community service projects, according to a news release from Bill Austin, Public Affairs Officer for NS Mayport.
Austin said while deployed the USS Underwood interdicted more than $27.5 million worth of cocaine from drug smugglers.
The ship also conducted a rescue at sea, saving the lives of six Peruvian fishermen.
During the deployment the ship made port calls to Peru, Panama, Chile, Jamaica and Trinidad.
Austin said the ship is scheduled to be decommissioned in March 2013.
