JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sailors at Naval Station Mayport marked the anniversary of the Battle of Midway on Monday.

Naval Station Mayport Commanding Officer Captain Doug Cochrane was joined by Commander Navy Region Southeast, Rear Admiral Jack Scorby and NAS Jacksonville Executive Officer, Captain Roy Undersander tossed a commemorative wreath into the basin of Naval Station Mayport on Monday morning.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of what is considered one of the most decisive battles of World War II. The battle, fought in 1942,  changed the course of the war since Americans and their Allies went on the offensive afterward.

The ceremony at Mayport took place aboard the USS DeWert.

A 21-gun salute also took place to honor the occasion.
