HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - As he pushes his economic agenda to service members and their families, President Barack Obama is praising companies that have promised to hire 25,000 veterans or military spouses within two years. He says it's a sign of patriotism and business savvy.

Speaking at a military base in Virginia today with the first lady at his side, Obama made a pitch for his jobs bill that was less partisan than it's been at other stops on his three-day bus tour of North Carolina and Virginia.

Obama said every company should want to hire veterans because of their leadership experience, mastery of cutting-edge technology and other skills. But unemployment among veterans is high.

Obama wants Congress to approve separate tax credits worth thousands of dollars for businesses that hire veterans who've been out of work for at least six months, including those with disabilities.
