Mandatory evacuation called for all of Glynn County

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. -- The Glynn County Board of Commissioners have called for a mandatory evacuation for all residents.

The mandatory evacuation order is in effect as of 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6 in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew. It is highly recommended that residents in this area evacuate as soon as possible.

Glynn County is currently under a Hurricane Warning. Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly starting late Thursday afternoon into the evening. Winds of 50-60 miles per hour with gusts up to and above 90 miles per hour are expected for at least 24 hours in the Glynn County area.

As much as 10 inches of rain are forecasted in addition to surge levels of 4-8 feet. Power outages are highly anticipated and could last for an undetermined amount of time.

According to the Board of County Commissioners, there is a strong possibility that the Jekyll Island Causeway will be closed due to storm surge. A possible closure of the FJ Torras Causeway is likely due to the storm surge. Any closures will take place when conditions make the roadways impassable. The Sidney Lanier Bridge will close when winds reach between 40-45 miles per hour.
