Volunteers clean up Northwest Jacksonville community

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One Jacksonville neighborhood got a major face-lift Friday.

Mayor Alvin Brown led city teams around the Durkeeville neighborhood as part of a beautification project for Myrtle Avenue.

Martia Jackson grew up inn Durkeeville.

"The neighborhood is a relatively good neighborhood," he said.

It's an area the city said has a lot of potential.

"It's an area we are focused on to make sure that it's clean and safe," said Mayor Alvin Brown.

Area teenagers also got in on the action.

Several high school teenager spent hours mowing lawns and trimming bushes.

"I like to stay out of trouble. It keeps me doing something positive and I think that's better than being out there getting in trouble," said high school student Climmie Gibson.

Volunteers said it felt good to give back, and they hope it will inspire other people to keep the neighborhood clean.
