Victim identified in weekend shooting

Update: Neighbors and those who knew 34 year-old Dustin Minarik well are still trying come to grips with what happened.

A family friend told First Coast News off camera she believes Minarik died saving his girlfriend's life.

"He was like a father to me," De'Borah Dickerson, a 14-year-old former neighbor, said.

Dickerson said she knew Minarik well.

"He would've given the shirt off his back if you needed it," she recalled.

On Sunday afternoon, police were still working the scene where Minarik was shot.

"Wow, I cannot believe this happened to him. He was just an innocent bystander," Dickerson said.

Who shot Minarik, and why, is not yet clear.

Police said there was a house party going on across the street. But police said Minarik didn't attend the party nor did he appear to have an altercation with anyone at the party.

A family friend told FCN's David Williams off camera that Minarik heard a gunshot, threw himself over his girlfriend to protect her and took the bullet that would've hit her.

"He turned around, shielded her and they shot him in his back," the friend said.

Minarik died at the hospital. Neighbor Gilbert Remogat was awakened by gunfire and said he heard a woman scream for help.

"I was shocked, I was surprised," he said. "This is the first time happened in this area."

Dickerson said she'll never forget Minarik's last words to her.

"Don't ever stop being you," she said. "And he was like 'make sure you stay strong.'"

A family friend tells FCN that Minarik leaves behind three children ages 7, 9 and 12.
