Van driven by a teen smashes into Eastside church; Awning collapses to ground

The awning is on the ground but the church says they'll stay open.

A van being driven by a trio of teens reportedly smashed into an Eastside church and forced the building's awning to collapse, a pastor there says.

A gun was also found by JSO in the parking lot, according to a pastor at Bethesda Faith Assembly Church on E. 4th Street.

The teens reportedly bailed and left the van at church, but one teen returned to try and get the gun unsuccessfully.

“All of a sudden on the side I heard someone hit real loud like it was a transformer and it vibrated the van and I thought somebody had hit the van,” says Pastor Ronnie Coegn.

The doors to the church may be closed, but the pastor says they will open for services as scheduled. It is still unclear why the van crashed into the church.
