Update: FHP trooper among 3 killed in I-75 crash

OCALA, Fla. -- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was among three who were killed Saturday during a crash on Interstate I-75 near Ocala.

According to FHP, trooper Chelsea Richard and the tow truck driver were working a two car crash around 2 p.m. when another crash happened nearby. During the crash, a pickup truck traveled onto the shoulder and struck the FHP patrol vehicle, Richard, the tow truck driver and a pedestrian, according to FHP.

Trooper Richard and tow truck driver were pronounced dead at the scene. The pedestrian, George R. Phillips, 52, of Ocala, was transported in critical condition to Ocala Regional Hospital. Phillips later died from his injuries.

Florida Police Officers and Sheriff Deputies released this statement: It is with a heavy heart that we deliver very sad news tonight. Troop B's Trooper Chelsea Richard was killed in the line of duty today while working a crash on I-75 in Marion County. Chelsea joined FHP on June 20, 2005 and graduated from the 111th Basic Recruit Class on January 12, 2006.

Richard left behind a young son.

Charges are pending the completion of the traffic homicide investigation which could take several months.

According to FHP, funeral arrangements for Trooper Richard are being formed and will be available once decisions are made by the family.
