ST. JOHNS COUNTY-- A Nease High School graduate has died after an accident on State Road 16 at Murabella Parkway near World Golf Village Sunday evening.
The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the victim who died as 18-year-old Griffin Moody of Ponte Vedra.
Five others were taken to local hospitals including two who were airlifted, St. Johns County Fire Rescue says.
Investigators say Moody was a passenger in a car traveling west on State Road 16 when it slowed down to make a turn. Troopers say the driver of that car failed to see an oncoming vehicle, who hit the car on its right side.
We open our hearts this morning to everyone at Nease, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We extend our love to you all 💘 @NeaseStudent— Bear Nation (@BTHSStudentSect) September 12, 2016
The accident happened just after 8 p.m. Fire rescue workers had to pull several people out of the wreck.
It has been revealed that Moody recently graduated from Allen D. Nease High School. Mary Crean, Claire Crean and Meghan Theobald, all 18, were in their senior year.
The driver of the other car was 20-year-old Weston Power and his passenger was 19-year-old Tresca Esguerra.
The St. Johns County School District has said Crisis Team members will be available at Nease High School for both students and staff that have been affected by this tragedy.
Hospital officials tell First Coast News that Weston Michael Power and Tresca Lynn Esguerra have been released from the hospital.
