'The Purge' a concern for Unity Fest organizers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Unity Fest is set for this weekend in Jacksonville. It starts Saturday at the Titus Harvest Dome on Atlantic Blvd., and continues Sunday at Aqua.

Former Jacksonville Jaguar Marcus Stroud is one of the promoters. He says the event is designed to use music to bring people together.

"It's something where we're just trying to get the people together where they can interact in a safe environment," Stroud said.

The event falls on the same weekend as a flyer promoting "The Purge." It's taken from a recently released movie - where all crime was allowed - for 12 hours. The flyer includes the quote "get your squad ready". On the bottom of the flyer is a date, August 31st, midnight.

Stroud says he's aware of the flyer, and is stepping up security, just in case.

"We are definitely aware of it, and that's why we have the heightened security," he said.

Stroud says instead of focusing on the flyer, he wants Unity Fest to be a chance to start to make the city safer.

"That's the purpose of us doing this Unity Fest, so we can cut foolishness like that out, that shouldn't even be on our radar," he said.
