Teen rescues elderly woman from house fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An elderly woman was rescued from a burning home in Arlington early Tuesday morning.

According to Chief Roger Lewis with Jacksonville Fire Rescue, a 16-year-old boy was sitting on his porch in the 8800 block of Eaton Avenue when he realized a fire had started inside the home.

Cody Williams says he was on the front porch when the house caught fire. He says he immediately thought of his mom's elderly friend asleep inside. But, he says there was so much smoke he had to go around the house and bust a window to get her out.

The teen rushed into the house to rescue the 67-year-old woman and bring her to safety, according to JFRD.

"All I was worried about was getting her out. She's like family to me. Them's my people. I was just trying to help her out, get her out safely out of the house. Make sure she's alright," Williams said.

Lewis said the unidentified woman suffered second degree burns to her arm. She was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials reported that the home is a total loss.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
