Kindergarteners Learn to Listen in Teacher of the Week's Class

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Silence is something you rarely hear from kindergarteners.

But in Kathleen Burns' New Berlin Elementary classroom, voices never get above a whisper. "The louder I get, the louder they get, and I will never win that battle," Burns said in a whisper.

With 18 students, her patience and soft voice keep the peace.

"If I'm quiet, they'll get quiet so they can hear because they think it's something important," Burns said. "It's like our little secret."

"She's remarkable with the students. She teaches them responsibility. As you can see, she talks to them very quietly and they learn how to listen," explained Laura Heckley, a student teacher.

Burns has been teaching for seven years and said she loves working with the kindergarteners.

"To watch little kids come in, their face lights up and they're so excited about being here every day," Burns said. "You can tell that they've learned something new and they soak it all up."
