By Roger Weeder First Coast News JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Insight into a painful chapter of world history is on display at the Jacksonville Main Library with letters written more than 60 years ago. "Letters to Sala" is the exhibit based on the book, "Sala's Gift, My Mother's Holocaust Story," by Ann Kirschner. Sala Garncarz, who is now 83 years old, spent five years in several labor camps. Kirschner says after facing open heart surgery 15 years ago, her mother told the family about the letters that numbered more than 300. The letters were received from family and friends while she was in slave labor camps run by Nazi Germany. Kirschner says there's a message in her mother's story. "The truth is the human spirit can survive and thrive on the most remarkable, remarkable circumstances," Kirschner said. "Courage is what we need." The "Letters to Sala" exhibit will be on display through May 15.
