JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The foundation has been laid for a brand new home in Brentwood Park. Habijax is building that one plus 93 others. Brentwood is becoming McNair Park Villas. It's a brand new community with soon to be new homes, a medical center, a community center and the NFL YET (Youth Education Town) Center.
The Brentwood Park Apartments were torn down more than a year ago. It was a community that was crime ridden and drug infested. Through a $20 million grant, Habijax and the Jacksonville Housing Authority will change the area and give it a new look.
Habijax is the largest Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the country. It has been around since 1988. Volunteers have built 1,300 homes. Habijax makes the dreams of so many come true. It enables people to own their own home.
McNair Park Villas will be Habijax's largest project to date. Volunteers are working today (January 4) on the very first home. They are putting up the walls of Wanda Johnson's home. She says she is very excited. She says her two sons "can't wait to move in."
Organizers with Habijax say Johnson's home should be finished by April. The entire McNair Park Villas, including the medical and community centers, is expected to be finished within 18 months.
