The Buffalo Bills caught some fans off guard when they traded down in the first round of April's draft, then made Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel the first quarterback off the board with the 16th overall pick.
The rookie made general manager Buddy Nix look wise on Sunday as he led a nine-play, 80 yard drive with 1:38 to go, throwing a two-yard touchdown to Stevie Johnson to give the Bills a 24-23 win.
Here are the key moments of the final drive.
1) After completing 5 of 7 attempts for 51 yards, Manuel and the Bills have the ball at Carolina's 31 on 3rd and 6, when a Luke Kuechly pass interference call negates a Panthers interception, giving the Bills the ball on the Panthers' 11 with 14 seconds left.
2) Manuel showcases his athleticism and scrambles to the right for a nine yard gain before he's pushed out of bounds, giving him one possible game-winning play with his team down 23-17 on the 2 yard line and six seconds on the clock.
3) Enter Stevie Johnson.
The veteran receiver runs a fade route towards the left corner of the end zone where Manuel finds him easily for a two-yard touchdown.
4) Manuel sits on the bench and cries tears of joy as he watches Bills kicker Dan Carpenter boot the extra point.
5) His final move? Celebrate the moment with his father, Eric Manuel, Sr.
Manuel has been far from perfect in his first two weeks, but his late game heroics against the Panthers and his play in a two-point loss to the Patriots in Week 1 has to be encouraging to fans in western New York. Manuel gets his first road test and an inevitable head-to-head comparison with fellow rookie Geno Smith when the Bills travel to MetLife Stadium to face the Jets next week.
