A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office detention officer getting ready for work has died after he was shot in front of his home in west Phoenix on Thursday morning, authorities said.
Details remain sketchy, but the shooting occurred at about 4:30 a.m. near Lower Buckeye Road and 91st Avenue. Phoenix police said the detention officer was wearing part of a uniform and went out to get his pickup truck started.
Neighbors heard gunshots. The detention officer, who works in the food factory for the county jail system, was found with a gunshot wound.
The employee was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition, according to authorities. He later was pronounced dead.
The Phoenix Police Department doesn't have any suspects in custody.
