BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators in Bradford County are still searching for the man who broke into a woman's home on State Road 16 and stabbed her. The man was wearing a mask, so investigators don't have a good description.
In a terrifying fight for her life, Ashleigh Elam won.
"We came home, walked in, somebody was inside. He ran for the back door, I chased after him and tackled him, rolled around," Elam said.
Left with a stab wound, Elam and her neighbors say they are ready if he comes back.
"Oh, I would have shot him," neighbor Bonnie Landry said.
Landry said she commends Elam on her brave actions. This situation does not make her feel unsafe in her home.
"I've been here 25 years, I've been broken into one time in 25 years, and I don't think that's too bad."
As for Elam, she is trying to comprehend what has happened in what is turning out to be one of the craziest days of her life.
"It's one of those things that you don't think will ever happen to you. It's still kind of unrealistic that someone would be in my house of all places," she explained.
Elam said she already has three dogs, but that didn't help. Now she is looking at getting a security system.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police.
