BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. -- Personnel from several law enforcement agencies are searching for a masked burglar who stabbed a woman.
The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. Two female roommates were coming to their home off of East State Road 16 near the Clay County line, according to Capt. Brad Smith of the Bradford County Sheriff's Office.
One woman went into the house while the other was still outside. The woman who entered the house saw a masked male wearing a long sleeved dark colored shirt and dark colored pants.
During a scuffle in the living room, the woman told police she believed she stabbed the man in the chest with a pocket knife. The man then took her knife and stabbed her in the leg.
The man fled out of the back door and police later recovered the knife, Smith said.
The woman was treated and released from a local hospital for a laceration to her thigh.
Twenty BCSO officers were out searching for the suspect in a secured perimeter in a dense, rural area where they believe the suspect is hiding.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office and its K-9 unit responded to the house, the Union Correctional Institute has offered bloodhounds for a ground search, and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has a chopper in the area.
The search was discontinued late Wednesday evening without finding the suspect.
Residents are encouraged to be alert and call 911 if they see anything suspicious. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call BCSO at (904) 966-6161.
