SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Savannah's mayor and some city council members are calling for a more aggressive approach to curb what they say are increasing reports of misconduct among the homeless downtown.
Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson said at a Thursday city council meeting that residents and business owners are complaining about disruptive behavior. She said the complaints include at least one report of a homeless person snatching a customer's food from an outdoor table on River Street.
Mayor Pro Tem Van Johnson, who represents downtown, and Alderman Tony Thomas also said they were hearing from constituents about additional concerns.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/QYITK6) that residents have told the council members that they're worried about public urination, belligerent demands for money and the use of downtown squares and park benches for sleeping.
