The Broadway League announced Sunday afternoon that, in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy and New York City's preparations for it, all Broadway performances for Sunday and Monday nights would be canceled.

It had been revealed earlier that government authorities will suspend public transportation starting Sunday evening because of the impending storm.

League executive director Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement that "the safety and security of theatergoers and employees is everyone's primary concern."

A number of Broadway venues are dark on Sunday and/or Monday evenings and will not be affected. Those who do have tickets for scheduled performances can seek refunds or exchanges. More information is available, along with updates, at the League's official site, www.livebroadway.com.
