ATLANTA -- Neighborhood groups in Atlanta are mobilizing to protest a rezoning proposal that would enable a Walmart store to open in the city's Buckhead neighborhood.
WSB-TV reports opponents of the project spent the weekend sending email messages to Atlanta City Council members, who were scheduled to discuss the issue at a meeting Monday.
The proposal would rezone 21 acres to allow more commercial development near the city's Lindbergh MARTA mass-transit station.
Tom Shepherd of the Garden Hills Civic Association says allowing a Walmart store would threaten to turn the area into a "traffic pit." But his neighbor, Dave Henry, says he doesn't understand why people are protesting a proposed Walmart when the area already has Target and Home Depot stores.
