NEW YORK -- A New York angler was hoping to catch some fish but instead reeled in a 30-pound turtle off a Brooklyn pier.

It appears to be a baby loggerhead turtle, which can grow to be 3-feet long and up to 300 pounds.

WNBC-TV says a silver tag attached to the reptile's flipper says National Park Service of Florida.

Marine biologists plan to release it back into the wild.

Kaheem Evans said he was fishing off a pier in Canarsie, Brooklyn, on Wednesday when he hooked the turtle.

The 23-year-old Queens resident says he's been fishing there for years. But it's the first time he's caught a turtle.
