The weekend storm came at the start of nesting season for the protected turtles.

MORE: 37 loggerhead turtles released in central Fla.

Kennard Watson of the St. Andrew Bay Resource Management Association told the Panama City News Herald the damage could have been worse.

He said Panama City Beach lost four nests from storm surge, but rescuers salvaged some eggs from the nests and hope they will still hatch.

The beach still has 18 nests. It is record turtle nesting season for the region.
