Cain Campaign says Security Needed from Media

By now, readers are aware GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain is receiving protection from the Secret Service.

Apparently, one of the concerns from the Cain campaign was the news media.

Herman Cain is the first of the eight major GOP presidential candidates to receive Secret Service protection. CAPTIONBy Jim Cole, APCain spokesman J.D. Gordon told The Washington Post that Secret Service protection was needed because "it has been increasingly common for media to be physically putting themselves and others in danger by trying to follow him with a lot of heavy equipment and cameras in close quarters."

A Post article about "physical skirmishes involving journalists" prompted the request, today's story said.

Cain's Secret Service protection took effect Thursday night, and the agents were on hand when the candidate taped an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman. Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan did not discuss the deliberations or assessments that went into approving Cain's request.

Cain is the first of the eight major GOP presidential candidates to receive Secret Service protection.
