EUSTIS, Fla. -- Gov. Rick Scott is proposing nearly $5 billion in spending cuts in the next budget year and $2.6 billion more the following year.
The new Republican governor also called for $4.1 billion in business and property tax cuts as part of a two-year spending plan he unveiled Monday during a tea party rally in the small central Florida town of Eustis.
Scott departed from usual practice by presenting his plan outside Tallahassee and proposing two years worth of spending - $65.9 billion the first year and $63.3 billion the second - instead of just one.
GOP-leaning tea party activists gave a more favorable response to his proposals that Scott expects to get in Tallahassee.
Legislative leaders say they don't see how the state can afford tax cuts.
