Self-defense suspected in late night stabbing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man is fighting for his life following a stabbing on Jacksonville's Westside. Authorities are looking into whether the person who stabbed him did so in self-defense.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit responded to reports of a fight at the intersection of 110th Street and Catoma just after 11 p.m.

When they arrived, they learned two men in their mid 30's got into a fight. Authorities said one man stabbed the other man in the torso during the altercation.

The victim was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries. He is undergoing surgery Friday morning.

"The prognosis is not good. We are being told that individual may not make it out of surgery," said Sgt. Jay Farhat of the JSO Homicide Unit.

Authorities said they're exploring the possibility that the man was stabbed the victim in self-defense. The suspect is being questioned at JSO headquarters.
