Secretary of the Navy stops at Kings Bay Submarine Base

KINGS BAY SUB BASE Ga. -- With potential cuts looming, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus talked with 1,800 sailors and marines at Kings Bay.

Mabus told the men and women cuts should be made, but they need to be done in a way that doesn't impact staffing.

"We've got to keep building ships – for example. We've got to keep that global presence – we got to make sure we keep our technological edge," he said.

The proposed cuts could mean shrinking the size of the military to the points that haven't been seen in decades. Mabus says that's a big step in the wrong direction.

"It shouldn't have gotten to this point," he said.

Mabus also talked about other local bases such as Mayport and NAS JAX. He says more ships are still scheduled to come to Mayport this year, and NAS JAX has great facilities.

"At least from where I stand today, you've got a great and very important part in the Navy's future," he said.
