Pastors hoping to ride along with JSO deputies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Operation Save our Sons said they want local pastors to ride along with Jacksonville Sheriff's Office deputies. The goal is to have pastors take a look at where crime is happening to help find out why.

"I think having the presence of pastors and religious leaders allows us to engage our community," said Dr. John Guns, founder of Save our Sons.

Dr. Guns said he wants to assign one pastor to a neighborhood all across the city. That pastor would serve as a mentor and work directly with victim's families. Dr. Guns said he wants JSO to call the pastor out to a crime scene.

"We can't do what JSO does, we can't do with the State Attorney's Office does, but they can't do what we do," he said.

JSO told First Coast News they're on board with the proposal. One pastor will be riding along with an officer for a shift. The process will be the same as the one for Civilian Ride Alongs.

Dr. Guns said he'd like pastors in patrol cars as soon as possible.
