ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- When police officers who live in northern St. Johns County woke up Wednesday morning and went to their cars, many found their tires had been slashed and some even had graffiti on them.
In neighborhoods along County Road 210, officers found flat tires on their patrol cars sitting right in front of their homes.
At least nine patrol cars were hit, including vehicles from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, and the Florida Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said the suspect could have created a risky scenario by slashing the tires with knives.
"Had one of those officers walked out and confronted an individual with a knife in his hand, that could been a dangerous situation," Mulligan said.
While police have been targets of criminal mischief before, the thousands of dollars worth of damage is something taxpayers will have to pay for.
Some officers who had one tire slashed were able to change it out themselves. However, others who had two, three, and four tires slashed had to have their cars towed.
No word yet on any arrests in the case.
Call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS.
