JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Astronauts get to experience weightlessness and now you can too. In our special series, 'Looking good and feeling great for summer,' we discovered a way to relax that's almost out of this world.

In the 1950's, Nasa commissioned scientist John C. Lily to find a way to replicate weightlessness. He came up with a flotation tank.

Casablanca Beauty Centre in Avondale now has one of the first zero gravity flotation tanks on the First Coast.

The tank contains 700 pounds of epsom salt and 150 gallons of water. One hour of flotation in the tank apparently equals 8 to 12 hours of sleep.

When Linda Yankee gets into the flotation tank for the first time she immediately begins to float. She says, "It feels great."

Corey Dalton is the owner of Casablanca Beauty Centre in Avondale. "Now Linda is in 10-inches of emulsion and yet she's absolutely floating."

Dalton purchased the flotation tank in Europe to relieve his own pain. "I have chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, meaning I'm very slowly loosing the use of my arms and legs. It's the only thing that gave me any relief. For that one hour I realize I'm in no pain whatsoever."

He says flotation is known to relieve stress and pain and a number of other ailments including asthma, anxiety disorders and insomnia, migraines, every day aches and pains, and jet lag.

Dalton says, "It adjust your time clock. If your completely jet lagged (it goes away.)"

Floating can apparently help people reach levels of relaxation only seen in deep meditation. The deep relaxation state allows the body to recover from stress, relieve pain and stimulate blood flow. It basically feels good.

Dalton says, "Anything that makes your body feel better, puts your mind at ease; come on bring on the wine and caviar."

After spending 30-minutes in the float tank, Linda is totally relaxed. "I think it was wonderful. I feel great."

The flotation tank is located at the Casablanca Beauty Centre in Avondale. It cost $100 for an hour; however, anyone with multiple sclerosis can come use the tank for free. Dalton says he's not going to charge anyone who is going through the pain he's going through.
