PALATKA, FL (AP) -- More than 100 workers are losing their jobs at the Georgia-Pacific Palatka sawmill.
The company announced that it is suspending operations immediately because of a slowdown in the construction industry.
It says it will re-evaluate the plant's status sometime in the middle of next year and could resume operations then.
Company spokesman Jeremy Alexander says the decision to close is based on the overall market conditions. He says it is not a reflection on the work of the employees.
Alexander says hourly employees at the mill will be entitled to 60 days of pay with benefits, while salaried employees have a severance package.
All employees can apply for other positions within Georgia-Pacific. The company also owns a plywood lant and a pulp and paper mill near Palatka which will remain open.
