City Foreclosure Task Force Offers Relief to Homeowners

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- She has lived here in her Northside home for 16 years, but now Cynthia Hudson is counting down the days until she'll be forced out.

"This is home, I got my house in 1994; my baby was 1. Now he's 16," Hudson said.

The combination of a jump in her mortgage payment and losing her job left Hudson unable to make payments for most of this year. She said the stress has been overwhelming.

"I thought I was having a heart attack. I had real bad chest pains, and the doctors said it wasn't a heart attack - it was stress..."

Because Hudson is just one of thousands in this situation in Jacksonville, the city set up its foreclosure task force. Already it has helped nearly 2,000 homeowners and sent information to 3,000 more.

"I saw an article in Forbes Magazine last year where Jacksonville was number one for rate of foreclosures per capita in the country. Anytime you see yourself on the top of a list that's negative, it needs to be a problem that's addressed," says city council member Kevin Hyde.

However, right now there is only limited funding for the task force. But several banks said they'll provide a boost  -  $35,000 to the task force and new cooperation in helping the city's foreclosure victims.
