ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- There are more than 125 miles of waterway in St. Johns County, and homes can be tough for emergency crews to find.

Saying emergency calls frequently are best reached by water, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office wants homeowners along the waterways to put addresses on their docks.

Crews move very fast in responding to missing Alzheimer's patients, toxic spills and crashes, and they need to be able to know where they are at a glance.

The sheriff's office asks residents to put 5-inch reflective numbers (or a similarly-sized sign, white numbers on blue) on docks, boathouses, fences or posts -- anything that's visible from the water.

The arrangement can be either horizontal or vertical, but it needs to be visible from either direction along the water.

Emergency officials in the county are going door-to-door with literature for homeowners showing the importance of the signage.
