JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Former Jaguars lineman Richard Collier got justice, and now he's getting an award.

Earlier in November, Tyrone Hartsfield was convicted of shooting Collier in 2008.

Collier was left paralyzed from the waist down and had part of his left leg amputated.  He was competing for a starting spot on the offensive line at the time of the shooting.

Friday, the Jaguars announced that Collier is this year's recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.

All 32 NFL teams honor one teammate each year who best exemplifies sportsmanship and courage.

"He has fought a difficult battle and overcame all odds and has moved forward and progressed into this new phase of his life," said Jaguars head athletic trainer/physical therapist Mike Ryan.

"He spends significant time speaking in the community about being responsible for one's own actions.  Richard has also dedicated himself to the youth in the area in hopes that he can inspire and bring positive relations.  Richard is a true model of courage."

The 32 men will be honored at the annual Ed Block Courage Awards Dinner in Baltimore next spring.

Ed Block was the longtime trainer for the Baltimore Colts, and was widely known as a great humanitarian.

The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation is aimed at preventing child abuse and helping abused children.
