JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The routine walk home from the post office on Monday had 68-year-old Yvonne Kirkland facing three dogs on the loose and a 100-pound rottweiler biting her several times.
Kirkland spent two days in the hospital recovering from the dog attack that happened near her home on West 25th Street.
"I seen them come, but I could not do nothing...they knocked me down," said Kirkland, who could not put any pressure on her right leg, where she suffers from deep bite wounds.
Dorian Sharon Norman witnessed the attack and jumped to help the defenseless grandmother.
"She (Kirkland) started screaming and they knocked her down and she just started trying kicking. The only thing she had was a small umbrella," said Norman.
The owner of the dogs was finally able to get the dogs off Kirkland and then surrendered them to Animal Control and Protective Services.
Two of the dogs could possibly be put up for adoption, but the rottweiler that did the biting will be going nowhere, according to Schott Trebatoski, Chief of Animal Control.
"Typically when a dog bites it will bite again," said Trebatoski, who added the rottweiler will be euthanized.
The city says every year, on average, 300 people are bitten by dogs.
