JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For Dan McDougall, September 22 started off very badly.
That morning, he found out he lost his computer security job at Bank of America. With a baby on the way and a mortgage to pay, he was panicked.
"We might lose the house, I'm going to have to declare bankruptcy, that type of situation," said McDougall.
As far as his job, one door had closed, but Dan had just entered a contest a few weeks earlier.
Since computer programming is a hobby of his, Dan had entered a program-writing contest on the website of a company called Ubiquity.
And just a few hours after losing his job, "I found out I won that contest and everything was different now, I didn't have to worry about it, everything was going to be fine," said McDougall.
So, while the day had started with Dan cutting all nonessentials from his budget, he ended it going out to dinner at a fancy restaurant, $90,000 richer! He knew he had won on Sept. 22, but the winners were just made public this week. Dan will use his prize money toward buying a new house. He has since found a new job.
