JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After deliberating less than three hours, a Duval County jury found Tyrone Hartsfield guilty of first-degree attempted murder.
As officers led Hartsfield out of the courtroom, he told anyone who would listen that the trial was not fair.
"All I ask for is a fair trial. I not one that did that. All I ask is for a fair trial," Hartsfield said.
In September of last year, Hartsfield shot then-Jacksonville Jaguars player Richard Collier several times as Collier sat in an SUV outside a Riverside apartment.
The attack left Collier paralyzed. He also had to have his left leg amputated.
Collier testified against Hartsfield early in the trial and was there for Thursday's verdict.
"We got a guilty verdict. Everybody's satisfied," Collier told reporters outside the courtroom. "But it's still just so sad. I can't smile because it's sickening to me."
The prosecution credits the testimony of Stephfan Wilson for the guilty verdict. Wilson was with Hartsfield the night of the shooting and testified against him.
"You can call him whatever you want but it takes a lot of courage to be labeled a snitch and to still come into this courtroom and finger somebody," said Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda.
Defense attorney Ann Finnell had little to say except, "At this point we're tired and pretty disappointed."
When Collier was asked if because of the resolution of the trial he thought he could now move on he said, "I've already moved on."
Hartsfield could be sentenced up to life in prison for attempted murder, and up to 30 years in prison for the additional weapons charge for which he was also found guilty.
