JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- More than 60 executives spent the day as " Principals For The Day" at Duval County schools.
The purpose of the program is to get a peek at the daily functions of a school and the role of leadership. The school system hopes it translates into a long-term relationship with the school, thus supporting the overall academics of students.
Acosta Inc. Executive Chairman Gary Chartrand followed first year Terry Parker High Principal Addison Davis on campus all day, visiting classes and talking to teachers and students. He knows being a principal has its challenges.
"People need to understand it's a tough job. They need to support our principals," said Chartrand.
After his visit to Parker, Chartrand said he has realized ways to help improve graduation rates and academic achievement in Duval County.
"After spending a day here , it encourages me to find innovative ways to make our school system better. Whether you are a business leader, a grandparent, have kids in school or not, you need to get involved to make it better," said Chartrand.
Davis welcomed the opportunity to have another set of eyes to see his school operation and hopes he learns something as well.
"When you have a third set of eyes come into the building they can see things you do not see. I am embedded into this institution," Davis said. "When he comes and gives another perspective it really helps us to grow and make some adjustments where we can move this building forward and do right by kids."
