JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Many of you spend most of your day at work. And it's not easy. There's the co-worker you can't stand. Maybe you work with a boss that bugs you to death. Or, how about the employee that never follows directions? Well, Good Morning Jacksonville is going to help you win at work. UNF professor Paul Fadil will be here on Thursdays for Office Chat. He is at the Coggin College of Business where he specializes in organizational behavior and international management. He'll talk about how to make you a better person at your job by giving you strategies to handle those cubicle crises. Today we're talking about getting a raise in a down economy. Thursday mornings between 5:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., you can chat with Dr. Paul online at firstcoastnews.com. Some basic tips include: -Document your work and achievements. -Tie your work to either revenues or cost-cutting for the company. -Know your worth to the company in numerical terms. -Continue to work hard and with a smile. -Be creative What if you don't get the raise: -You have positioned yourself in the future; your boss is now aware of your value to the company. -Continue to work hard and be pleasant (remember, in this economy the boss holds the cards). -If the boss feels that you deserve a raise and she just can't at this time, ask when you can come back to him/her. -Let your boss define the performance parameters necessary to warrant a raise in the future. What not to do: -"If I don't get a raise I am leaving." Your boss may call your bluff. -Don't whine about your workload. Everyone's got it tough. -Don't complain about your personal life expenses-very unprofessional. -Don't compare your work to others where you speak negatively of your co-workers. -Don't go back in time, well, last time you didn't get a raise. -Don't ask during your performance review. Ask when raises are not being given so there may actually be some money out there for you.
