JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Anthony Ortega, 20, was killed when the moped he was driving collided with a vehicle just south of Atlantic Boulevard around 5 p.m. Monday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ortega and his passenger, Nicole Alaine Prado, 20, were stopped at the stop sign at the entrance and exit of the Kmart parking lot on Atlantic Boulevard, near Third Street.
The other vehicle, a Chrysler, was in the left lane eastbound on Atlantic Boulevard.
Traffic in the right lane of Atlantic Boulevard was stopped, allowing Ortega to cross.
FHP says it appears Orgeta didn't notice the Chrysler with Elizabeth Silvia, 25, and her child inside. They say Silva could not avoid the moped and hit it.
Ortega and Prado were thrown from the moped. Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Prado was taken to Shands Hospital Jacksonville in serious condition.
Silvia suffered minor injuries, but her child was not harmed in the collision.
