JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Thousands of people drive by every day. Thousands more walk by on their way to conventions.
Locomotive 1504 has prime position at the Prime Osborn.
"That's a good pun and I'm glad you mentioned it. A lot of people just think it's a big piece of machinery," says George Bollinger.
Bollinger is part of a group trying to save this historic locomotive, built back in 1919. It was once the pride of Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, a predecessor of CSX.
With such a rich history with the railroads, Bollinger says a historic designation from the City of Jacksonville is fitting.
"That will loosen up hopefully some private funds to do some cosmetic restoration first, get it under cover. Hopefully we can get it out of the weather," Bollinger told First Coast News' Erich Spivey.
Weather is taking its toll. Rust is appearing and paint is peeling.
It's been at the Prime Osborn since 1986, already deemed historic by engineers and now hoping for city approval.
The proposal is waiting for a vote by Jacksonville's City Council.
