JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Four teens who died in a crash in June were honored at the first football game of the season for Ed White High School.
Nine students were in an SUV that crashed on I-295 in June. Police said a tire on the SUV separated.
Three teens, 15-year-old John Kiely, 15-year-old Kimber Krebs, and 17-year old Dennis Stout were killed in the crash. Erin Hurst, 15, died two weeks later.
On Friday evening, friends and family of the teens who died cheered on the Ed White Commanders. A solemn tribute had football fans on their feet, as a moment of silence commemorated the four friends who were not at the game.
"He would be here. He loved the first game of the season," said Dawn Fitzmaurice, the mother of Dennis Stout.
Fitzmaurice said her son loved a good game of football, which is why she showed up for the game. She said she ran into a lot of her son's friends, who are now her friends too.
"I'm trying to keep him alive in that way. They let me know what is going on in school, how things went," said Fitzmaurice.
Some parents at the game tell First Coast News their children are taking a lesson from the tragedy.
"(The school) dedicating this, just remember, you have to be careful on the road," said the mother of two football players, Sharon Adams.
Fitzmaurice said just being included in events like Friday's helps her heal and bond with her son's friends.
"(They are like) kids I never knew I had!" Fitzmaurice said with a laugh.
The Ed White Commanders won the game against the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerers 41-27.
